July 2023 Monthly Club Competition

Mark (clearly hiding a dodgy new veneers job with the trophy) presenting the trophy to Phil (in either a tired or an arrogant winner pose, we’re not sure) and Claudia presenting the KitKats (the calories and chocolate should perk Phil up!)

With the July monthly club competition falling on a Tuesday night, at the start of the school six-week getaway, there was some worry about numbers attending.  However, we needn’t have been worried with a very healthy thirteen fencers, in attendance, given the time of year.  It was decided to run two poules, one of six and one of seven, with Gully being the guest fencer making up the seven.  With four pistes set up, we got off to a punctual start at 7.30pm and made good progress through the matches on the two poules, even with Paul wanting ‘another minute or two’ between some bouts.  Gully dominated his poule winning five of his six duels being beaten only by Rohan on the night.  Mark came a close second winning all but two matches, losing to Gully and to left hander, Tadek.  Tadek, has shown great promise in the last few weeks, really coming along in his game and being one of the fencers that everyone seems to wince at, when they hear that he is their competitor – with all losers blaming his left-hand game.  Phil, Tadek and Paul all won 3 of their six matches with Gully proving that Tadek is no match for the accomplished fencer, being the only person to beat him 5-0.  Sofia had a slower start to the night, winning only 1 of her six matches in a very difficult poule; was this caused by the delay in getting her equipment to her, or spending too much time on the crochet, now that her exams have passed?  Only time will tell come September and the young lady is back into the school routine.

In the second poule of six athletes, Steve and Dave were the stand out stars, both winning four of their five bouts.  Richard, Peter and Abs all won 40% of their matches – a stand out night for Richard, especially as he was still trying to overcome a nasty bout of ‘man-thrax’ that had kept him away from the club only the Friday before (his wife was very sympathetic, the children…not so much!).  Claudia struggled, winning only one of her five duels, but blamed her disastrous poule round on the long run that she had taken earlier that day and had subsequently ‘wiped her out’.  No doubt, she won’t make the same mistake for the elimination section next Tuesday!  The following week could see a winner declared extremely quickly because, with a number of fencers already announcing absence there could be a lot of byes.  On the other hand, the Richard/Peter fence off could take a while, as neither wants to win and face Gully in the final 8!

After a two-week hiatus (the following week, after the poules, we had a glut of ‘guest’ fencers to the session, so it was decided to put the competition on hold and make the most of having some different faces present) we finally concluded the July monthly competition.  Peter and Richard were still arguing over who was going to lose and not have the ignominy of facing Gully in the final 8, Claudia was still gloating about Paul being away and getting a bye, Rohan was gutted to see that Phil had returned from work and would have to fence off for the final 8 round, while Sofia and Mark still couldn’t work out who would be the master out of the two of them, for a position in the final 8.  Thankfully, it wouldn’t be long before we would know who would be the monthly champion.

Four of the final 16 sixteen matches were byes, with three of the other four matches being very close-run things; all finishing with 5-4 score lines!  The only match to buck the trend was the Tadek versus Abs duel.  Despite a number of the accomplished membership all praising Tadek’s recent form, Abs swiftly and deftly overcame the left-hander with an astonishing 5-1 scoreline.  Abs modestly claimed that the height difference and therefore his reach had won the day.  Peter, much to his disappointment, saw off Richard, to face Gully; Sofia beat Mark to face Claudia; Phil overcame Rohan to face Dave and finally Abs was to duel Steve in the quarterfinals.

All of the quarterfinals were closely matched with three of the four matches finishing in a 5-4 scoreline and the final match ending 5-3.  Despite his reluctance at getting through and facing Gully, Peter had a great evening, overpowering the guest from Blackheath and beating him on the final point.  Sofia versus Claudia had been a bit of a non-affair, despite the 5-4 score line, as neither lady had wanted to progress and potentially face Gully (come on people, a bit more enthusiasm please, you’ve got to be in it to win it…just look at Peter!)  Dave narrowly missed out to Phil, with neither man able to claim a lack of practise as they had both been away the previous week and, in the final contest Steve beat Abs 5-3.

The semi-final round was a battle to 10 points.  With both matches quite even on paper, Phil and Steve showed the equality in their games with a final score of 10-7 to Phil, setting him up for a father versus son showdown in the final, as Peter, having the night of his life, beat Sofia 10-3.

After a short break, the fencers faced off for the accolade of both July Monthly Club Competition winner AND prowess in the Hutchin’s household…haven’t we done this before?  Phil took the very early lead and Peter came back just as quickly and overtook his dad on the scoring front.  Back and forth the points went with Peter eventually taking the lead and looking to win it, much to the delight of all the young guns in the room.  Phil, with plenty of support from the old guard, thrust a couple of moves and bought the score level and, a couple of double hits later, we looking at 14 a piece and it all coming down to who could get that winning hit.  Much to the delight of anyone over 50 years old (with or without hair!), Phil proved that age and experience can always overcome the exuberance of youth and claimed a 15-14 victory over his son.  I bet that was a joyous car ride home for the Hutchins Jnr of the family!

Well done to everyone who fought and particularly well done to our July victor, Phil (who not only took home the trophy, but selection of flavoured KitKats exclusively from Japan – we know how to spoil you!)

Next monthly club competition will begin on the final Tuesday in August.  Be there and ready for a 7.30pm start!

Gravesham Fencing Club – Open All Summer – to Members, Guests and New Fencers (Adult and Junior).

GRAVESHAM FENCING CLUB – COME AND ‘GUEST’ FENCE FOR THE NIGHT

Tuesday 1st August 2023 should have seen the members of Gravesham Fencing Club conclude their monthly, in-house, club competition; however, with so many ‘guest fencers’, from other clubs, in attendance, it was decided to put the club competition on hold for another week and take full advantage of fencing some different people.  With a healthy number of 14 members (for the summer holidays) and additional 8 guests, we were in for a busy night of fencing.

With use of half of the sports hall, at Cygnet Leisure Centre in Gravesend, four pistes were set-up.  Three were commandeered for the epee fencers and the fourth for the foilists among them.  Luckily, with club kit available to borrow (for those who forgot items), everybody was able to fence in the discipline that they wanted.  As usual, it was decided to ‘free fence’, with any fencer challenging another as soon as a piste became available.  The youngsters even got involved and happily fenced the guests, challenging themselves against some new and accomplished fencers.

Thank you to all our guests for a wonderful evening and we hope to see you again!  We run all adult sessions throughout the holidays, so just pop along.

For anybody else whose club has shut for the summer or, if you want to challenge yourself against some new faces, Gravesham is open, for experienced fencers (with their own kit) on Tuesdays from 7.00pm-9pm and Friday from 7pm to 9pm.

For those new to fencing we run beginner’s courses from only £50 for 8 sessions on a Friday evening, from 8-9pm, but these must be pre-arranged and the first trial session is FREE!

For children aged 8-12 years who would love to give the sport a try, we run coach led sessions on a Friday from 6-7pm, with all kit provided.

For junior fencers, from 13-16 years of age, we run coaching sessions on a Friday between 7-8pm; (these will re-commence in September 2023) but you are more than welcome to attend the free fencing sessions with the adults on Tuesday and Friday evenings between 7-9pm at any time of the year.

After the beginner’s course, and for all experienced members you will need to enrol as a member of the club, this involves filling out a few forms and setting up a standing order for the monthly fee; which are as follows:

Adults: £264 per year, payable as 12 monthly instalments of £22

Juniors (under 16 years of age): £240 per year, payable as 12 monthly instalments of £20

There is a monthly reduction of £1 for each additional member of the same family.

Guests: £10 per session (or for those attending regularly, concession price – as above), as agreed in advance with the coach/committee.

These fees give you attendance at both the Tuesday and/or Friday sessions and professional tuition (for those 13years and above, tuition may be limited to term time only, but you will be able to free fence during the adult sessions instead).

Finally, those who are not members of the Gravesham Leisure Link scheme (run by the council and outside our remit as hirers of the hall) must also pay £1.90 at a time to gain admission to the Cygnet Leisure Centre (£1.50 for juniors and senior citizens).  For those attending regularly, you can purchase a membership card from GCLL for a nominal annual fee, which will then give you admission to the site (you will need your supply your membership number on entry for fencing, if you have this).

London Region Summer 2023 Novice and Intermediate Competition

LONDON REGION SUMMER 2023 NOVICE AND INTERMEDIATE COMPETITION

After a somewhat fraught journey, the ‘boys’ eventually made it to the check-in with only minutes to spare.  After a quick warm-up they were placed in poules made up of Dave and Kevin and twelve other men for the intermediate epee.  Both men were self-appointed intermediate by way of their past fencing experience both in and out of competition, however, it became clear that this ‘grading’ clearly needs some more guidelines, with far superior fencers duelling in both the novice and intermediate sections, primarily based on a lack of fencing competition results, rather than ability.  With the journey taking its toll on both Dave and Kevin, they fought the first round of poules tentatively and, probably not to the best of their abilities.  However, in the second round of poules both men felt that they had warmed up and did themselves better justice.  The elimination section proved to be both men’s undoing, however, both were elated that at no point did they finish a match without scoring and, in many cases, scoring well against their opponent, even if the win did not go their way.  Overall, Dave finished in eleventh position, with Kevin in 14th and both men having gained vital experience against a field of men that they would not normally participate against.  Well done guys and keep up the good work for Gravesham!

As an addendum, regular Gravesham guest fencer, Raphael, finished a very respectable 3rd place in the Men’s novice epee.  Well done Raphael, now for the Junior Pentathlon Championships in Hungary!

June 2023 Monthly Club Competition

JUNE 2023 MONTHLY CLUB COMPETITION

The last Tuesday of June found us congregated, on yet another very hot and humid night, in the sports hall at Cygnet Leisure Centre.  Traffic problems, which we hoped would ease and, train problems, which we hoped would speed up, were looking likely to scupper the chances of some of those who wished to attend.  However, as time passed, the numbers slowly picked up until we eventually saw 16 entrants into this month’s competition.

Richard’s negative declaration that he was, yet again, in the ‘poule of death’ (clearly not true) and that he should ‘concede’ now, was only exacerbated by his first match being against his nemesis, Sofia.  Slightly lifted by the prospect that she is a better fighter at the longer distance (15 points over 5 points) he set about his duel with more gusto than usual, all in vain though, as he lost 5 v 3.  The negativity and heat clearly set in, unlike the previous month, as he only managed 57% of fights won in this month’s poule.  Sofia, clearly buoyed and rested, since the end of her exams, was having a storming night, managing to win 5 out of 7 fights.  Tadek, equally on form, also won 5 out of 7 of his fights.  Was it an improvement in form, or just that the others could not handle a left-hander.  Stuart was the champion of the poule, winning 6 out of 7 duels and only losing to on-form Sofia.  Abs was present for the first time in a few weeks and took the title in two of his bouts, earning him the nickname ‘The Hustler’!  Andrew, however, having arrived late, had to endure all 7 fights back-to-back, which proved catastrophic for any winning tally.

The actual ‘poule of death,’ on the night, should have been a much more closely fought battle, however, Sandy was clearly King on the night, winning 6 of his 7 matches and still managing 4 hits in the one that he lost.  How he managed it whilst being the Health and Safety executive on the night I’ll never know; regularly informing the scorer to move on because a player needed a break due to the heat, or was it because he wanted a longer break?  Was this his ploy?  Is he indeed the master of the mental mind games?  Hot on his heels were Phil and Henry who both won 5 out of their 7 battles, with Dave and Mark following on closely behind.  Shawn was clearly affected by the rush, due to the trains and only managed 1 win, whereas the shock of the night was Rohan, who came away with 0% of games won – what is happening Debnam’s?   With all of the poules completed, the teams were calculated for the team relay results to be fenced and finalised the following Tuesday – with any luck, in cooler circumstances!

The following Tuesday did indeed find us completing the June Monthly Competition in a cooler climate.  All participants, bar Abs, were present and, he was replaced by Jaina in Team D.  Fighting simultaneously on two pistes, Team A (Andrew, Stuart, Claudia and Phil) took on Team D (Mark, Peter, Jaina and Henry), whilst Team B (Rohan, Steve, Tadek and Sandy) took on Team C (Shawn, Dave, Sofia and Richard).  With each team complaining that their opponents were the ‘team to beat’ the duelling commenced with gusto.  Mark got Team D off to a flyer with a 3-0 advantage, however, Stuart managed to claw back Team A’s deficit to 5-6, giving the Claudia and Phil a fighting chance of winning against Jaina and Henry.  However, the early lead proved too much and Team D managed to retain their winning stance taking the victory with a narrow 12-11 margin.  Piste 2 had more turns, with Team B’s Rohan giving them a nice 3-1 lead off leg.  A lengthy battle between Steve and Dave saw the taller man narrowly take the lead for Team C, ending the bout 6-5.  Sofia managed to overcome the tricky left hander, Tadek and gain yet another point for Team C, whilst Richard finished off a dismal end to Team B’s run, again extending the point difference and giving Team C the win by 12 points to 9.

The third-place play-off was a quick affair with Team B taking an early lead through Rohan and, Steve, Tadek and Sandy followed in his lead quickly seeing off Team A, with a 12-8 victory.  The victory bout was equally as conclusive.  Mark gave Team D an early lead and Peter, Jaina and Henry had no problems seeing off their rivals to seal the win, also with a 12-8 victory.  For the losing teams the lack of a team prize (it had been lemon and white chocolate hot cross buns back in March) had proved to be their downfall.  Maybe, given the heat in recent days, they all claimed that they would have competed better if the promise of a winning ice cream were on offer…I’ll keep them in my bag next time!  So congratulations to Team D – Peter, Mark, Henry and Jaina for being the June Monthly Club Competition winners.
